A Brief About Systematic Lupus Erythematosus

Also known simply as lupus, is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in many parts of the body

What is SLE or Systematic Lupus Erythematosus?

In standard cases, yours and our immune system fight with various bacteria both good and bad, different antibodies and germs as well. But in some rare cases, our immune system fights with us and our body as it sometimes confuses because it confuses it to be like another foreign body. Thus it does not sometimes accept what other organs of your body perform. This way an autoimmune disease occurs when your immune system attacks your body.

One such autoimmune disease is called as – Systematic Lupus Erythematosus. Though there are other autoimmune diseases too besides this. SLE is known as a very dangerous and a chronic health disorder. It is a severe disease which can show worsening symptoms in different phases, starting from mild symptoms. Most people with SLE can live a healthy life with treatment.

How did the term arise?

The term Lupus denotes and identifies all the autoimmune diseases that have similar clinical reactions or laboratory presentation. Usually, people can be heard saying SLE whenever they say or refer lupus as a disease. Research from the Lupus Foundation in America stated that approximately 1.5 million people are reported to suffer from this health disorder. How so ever, more than this number of people are actually suffering from this chronic disease, but it remains undiagnosed.

Symptoms of SLE

Researches say that symptoms vary from time to time and all the more it varies from patient to patient. It is also not necessary that all the patients suffer from similar and common symptoms. Many times, this disease also remains unnoticed and undiagnosed because the symptoms are not noticeable or do not even occur. It also goes unnoticeable because in many cases, these symptoms were too casual to be noticed as for any chronic or acute health disorder.

You still should keep a check on these symptoms if you see any:

  • Joint aches
  • Swelling in joints
  • Severe fatigue
  • Severe headaches
  • Too much of hair loss
  • Blood clotting issues
  • Irregular bowel system
  • Various digestive issues

Lupus symptoms are also symptoms of many other diseases, which can make diagnosis tricky. If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor. Your doctor can run tests to gather the information required to make an accurate diagnosis.

Causes

The exact cause of SLE is yet not known to the researchers and even the doctors. Though some common causes that are told by the doctors are:

  • Genetics

People with a family history of lupus have repeated autoimmune disease spread to other members or generations.

  • Environmental

With so much pollution, this has triggered many autoimmune disorders. UV rays, various side effects of medicines, trauma and physical and emotional stress, etc. These are some such health issues that are faced by 90% of people today. The generation today is suffering from too much stress and tension that has triggered various hazardous health issues.

Treatment

There is no treatment to cure SLE, but you can be on steroids and drugs that can ease out your joint aches and swelling. Steroid creams are available in the pharmacy in case of harsh rashes on your skin. Researches say that a person has less lifespan if he/she is suffering from SLE.
