The median nerve in the forearm passes through the hand to the wrist. It is a small space in the wrist which allows this nerve to pass through it
This space is called the carpal tunnel. The nerve is responsible to perform the significant functions of a hand which includes being able to make your palm hold things, tilt and much more.
If the person is suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome or CTS mat feel weakness, tingling sensation or numbness in the hands. This is caused due to some traumatic pressure on the median nerve. People with jobs where handwork is involved, especially in an IT job where typing and clicking is a must, people are more prone to carpal tunnel syndrome. How to Diagnose it?
This syndrome can be diagnosed through a test called The Phalen’s sign test. The arms need to be held out in front of you and flex your wrist. Let the arms hang out for a minute. If you start feeling a tingling sensation of numbness in the fingers within 1 minute, you might have carpal tunnel syndrome. It is imperative for you to seek medical help immediately to be healed.
The most common and symbolic symptom of CTS is the pin and needle feeling in the fingers. It is a feeling as if pins and needles are pierced on the fingers. This pain worsens at night and can disturb your sleep too. You also might feel a burning sensation on the thumb, index and middle finger. Some people experience pain which moves up to the arm and elbow. The hands become very weak and do not allow you to perform even the primary functions of the hands which are necessary for our daily life.
How to avoid Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Negligent lifestyle results in such kind of syndromes. It can be best avoided by changing a few things in our daily lives. Some of the most important things are as follows-
- The hands should be relaxed while performing a physical task.
- Avoid gripping anything too tightly or beyond safety limits. In other words, grasp anything only hard enough to make sure that it is not hurting you.
- Keep your hands warm.
- Take frequent breaks if you are into performing a repetitive and intense task with your hands.
- Keep a watch on your posture and try to improve it if it seems too limp.
- Engage yourself in simple gymnastic or yoga stretches learned from a qualified instructor who would help to strengthen your hands
Carpal tunnel syndrome is becoming a common phenomenon, but it can be avoided by following the above strategies Lifestyle changes, a change in the mindset to start things for the better and a positive approach towards the awareness of our well being would be helpful.
